First script: Greek plays
Greek plays: first script
What happened today in class:
Today we started our Greek theatre unit, which lasts half a term. We were finally given our first scripts which allows us to work on a piece as a group. Using the knowledge that we have learnt from our last few lessons. As we have only had a few lessons to help us bring these pieces together, it allows us to use our knowledge to bring our work to live.
My Greek theatre piece is Medea.
The background of Medea is:
Euripides lived during the Golden Age of Athens, the city where he was born and lived most of his years. Born in 484 BC, his infancy saw the repulsion of the Persian invasion, a military victory that secured Athens’ political independence and eventual dominance over the Mediterranean world.
The story of Medea:
The play is set in Corinth some time after Jason’s quest for the Golden Fleece, where he met Medea. The play begins with Medea in a blind rage towards Jason for arranging to marry Glauce, the daughter of Creon (king of Corinth). The nurse, overhearing Medea’s grief, fears what she might do to herself or her children.
We also did the play Oedipus:
Oedipus was a very interesting place. I played Oedipus’s wife is also his mother my character married her son. It was very fun playing this role. As there was a lot that I could do with it.
The story of Oedipus:
According to the research I did during the process of the play, Laius the king of Thebes, was warned by an Oracle that his son would slay him. Oedipus solve the riddle, and the Sphinx killed herself. In reward, he received the throne of Thebes and the hand of the widowed Queen, his mother jocasta.
I played the widowed Queen, Jocasta.
